Its now been about 2 months since we discovered that Bully was very green and needed to be saddle trained. A lot has happened since then because I had a fear of riding him. I went through a couple trainers to help and they all did help in certain ways, but ultimately went back to the trainer who has helped me with riding. It took about a month and watching someone else ride a couple times for me to get back on. I would be lying if I said I didn’t have moments where I got a little nervous.
I have learned very quickly about the importance of groundwork and how it transitions into the saddle. I have a trainer that has taught me very well, and I am now doing every thing on my own. Bully does very well on the ground and responds perfectly to my breathing and energy.
During the past 2 months I have been riding him at least 3 times a week doing basics so that he learns to move forward and he stops when I either breath, or say whoa. Currently we are working on moving to leg pressure. He does it sometimes but it is not consistent. Summer has been hard because it has been so hot, and we are working in a round pen. The communication and trust between Bully and I has grown, and I know that he wouldn’t do anything like bucking again unless he was in pain. In a way I am glad that it happened because the process of getting him trained has been a ton of fun, and a great learning experience.
