We have had some progress in our training this past week, as well as a few new things that need to be corrected. For one he seems to be doing much better with the cross ties area. I still can’t tie them to his halter, but he doesn’t spook anymore in that area. On the downside though he is still needing a distraction in order to stay put. Also from time to time I struggle with getting his one foot up, but today he did much better. Some of the issues that need to be corrected would be rearing, and head shaking. He has always had somewhat of a hop to trot transition, very similar to a car at a stop and then hits the gas to quick. Twice now he has decided to rear with me on him. Not a very high rearing, and it seems to be when he sees his buddies running or playing but who knows. When he did it today I immediately got down and we lunged him to get some of that energy out. Afterwards he came up to me and seemed as if he felt bad lol. The head shaking is something he was doing before he was ridden, but now seems to be adding that to the ride. Both the rearing and head movements will need to be corrected before they get any worse, and we will have to rule out if its the saddle fitting, or any kind of pain he may have.
I am also working on getting him used to his surroundings, so we explore the farm at the end of his session. I had a goal last week of getting him to walk on a stool. It took several tries ( at least 7) and he nudged me off at one point, but eventually he was able to walk on it. It was one of those proud mama moments.
On a lighter note, I did find out today that he has been raced (harness racing) at least 6 times. In one of those races he finished in 3rd place. Apparently he is a pacer, and is related to Matt’s Scooter who earned over $2mil in their career.
